FAQ — Any Old Gold | Precious Metal Testing Kits

Question 1

What metals can your kits test?

Accepted Answer

Our kits are designed to test gold (from 9ct to 24ct), silver, platinum, and white gold. Multi-metal kits include acids for all of these in one package. Individual gold testing kits cover the most common UK hallmarks — 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, and 22ct.

Question 2

How accurate are acid testing kits?

Accepted Answer

Acid testing is a well-established, industry-standard method used by jewellers and pawnbrokers worldwide. When used correctly, results are highly reliable. For absolute certainty on high-value items, we recommend combining acid testing with an XRF analysis.

Question 3

Do I need any prior experience to use the kits?

Accepted Answer

No prior experience is needed. Each kit comes with clear, step-by-step instructions, and we have a detailed how-to guide on our Instructions page. The process is straightforward: scratch the metal, apply a drop of acid, and observe the colour reaction.

Question 4

What is a touchstone and do I need one?

Accepted Answer

A touchstone (also called a testing stone) is a black basalt or slate stone used to create a small scratch mark from the metal you're testing. The acid is applied to this scratch rather than directly to the item, which means the item itself is not damaged. A touchstone is not included in our complete kits, and is also not available separately.

Question 5

What's the difference between your starter, professional, and complete kits?

Accepted Answer

The Starter Kit is ideal for testing gold only and includes the most common acid. The Professional Kit adds more acid grades and is suited to jewellers or buyers who test regularly. The Complete Kit includes everything — gold, silver, and platinum acids, and full instructions — making it the best value for anyone who tests a range of metals.

Question 6

Can I test plated jewellery?

Accepted Answer

Acid testing will detect gold plating. When you scratch a plated item with a file, the base metal beneath the plating is often exposed in the scratch, and the acid reaction will reveal the true metal underneath. This is one of the most common uses for our kits.

Question 7

Are the acids dangerous?

Accepted Answer

The acids in our kits are corrosive chemicals and must be handled with care. Always wear protective gloves and eye protection when using them, work in a well-ventilated area, and keep them away from children. Full safety guidance is included with every kit and on our Instructions page.

Question 8

How should I store the acids?

Accepted Answer

Store acid bottles upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and out of reach of children. Keep the lids tightly closed when not in use. Do not store near food or drink. The acids have a shelf life of approximately 12–18 months when stored correctly.

Question 9

What do I do if acid contacts my skin?

Accepted Answer

Rinse the affected area immediately with plenty of cold running water for at least 10–15 minutes. If irritation persists or the contact was significant, seek medical advice. Always wear gloves and eye protection to prevent contact in the first place.

Question 10

How long does delivery take?

Accepted Answer

We dispatch orders within 1–2 business days. Standard UK delivery typically takes 2–3 business days after dispatch. You will receive a confirmation email with tracking information once your order has been dispatched.

Question 11

Do you ship outside the UK?

Accepted Answer

Currently we ship within the United Kingdom only. Due to the nature of the chemicals involved, international shipping is subject to strict regulations and we are not currently set up to fulfil overseas orders.

Question 12

Can I track my order?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Once your order is dispatched you will receive an email with your tracking reference and carrier details. You can also track your order at any time using our Track Order page — just enter your order ID and email address.

Question 13

What payment methods do you accept?

Accepted Answer

We accept all major debit and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and American Express) as well as PayPal. Payment is processed securely at checkout.

Question 14

What is your returns policy?

Accepted Answer

We accept returns within 30 days of purchase for items that are unused and in their original packaging. Due to the nature of chemical products, we cannot accept returns on acids that have been opened. Please see our full Returns Policy for details.

Question 15

My order arrived damaged — what should I do?

Accepted Answer

We're sorry to hear that. Please contact us within 48 hours of receiving your order with your order number and a photo of the damage. We will arrange a replacement or refund as quickly as possible.

Question 16

How do I start a return?

Accepted Answer

Get in touch via our Contact page or call us on 07833 822462 with your order number and reason for return. We'll guide you through the process and provide a return address.
