How to Accurately Test Gold Using Testing Acid

Whether you are evaluating inherited jewellery, car boot sale finds, or scrap precious metals, verifying purity is essential. While hallmarks offer an initial clue, heavy gold-plating or thick gold-filling can easily deceive surface-level tests—allowing counterfeit pieces to slip through the net. To definitively confirm if a piece is solid gold throughout, direct notch testing using testing acid remains the gold standard for buyers and traders.

Why Surface Tests Fail (And Why Notching Works)

Surface-level methods—such as drawing a streak on a slate touchstone—only evaluate the outermost micron of metal. Electroplated or heavy gold-filled items will routinely pass a touchstone test because the stone only picks up the top gold layer, hiding the base metal underneath (such as brass, copper, or steel).

Notching involves creating a tiny, controlled groove in an inconspicuous area of the item to reach the core. Applying testing acid directly into this notch exposes any underlying base metals instantly, ensuring plated pieces never pass undetected.

What You Need Before Starting - 9ct Gold Example.

Each different testing solution comes with its own instructions, bellow is the Base metal 9ct instructions.  Before testing your items, gather these core supplies:

  • Anyoldgold Acid Testing Solutions

Freshly formulated bottle for 9K (375) for gold verification.

  • Jeweller's File or Precision Blade

A fine-cut steel file or sharp scraper to make a small, precise mark.

  • Safety Gear

Protective nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

  • Neutralizer & Wipes

Paper towels and neutralizing solution to neutralize acid upon completion.

Safety First: Testing acids contain corrosive nitric and hydrochloric compounds. Always work in a well-ventilated space, wear protective gear, and keep solutions safely away from children and pets.

Step-by-Step Guide: The Direct Notch Testing Method

  1. 01

    Select an Inconspicuous Location

Choose a discreet spot on the item that will not impair its appearance or structural integrity—such as the inner band of a ring, the underside of a watch lug, or the inside loop of a pendant bail.

  2. 02

    Make a Precision Notch

Using your jeweller's file or precision blade, create a shallow notch or scratch through the surface layer. You must file deep enough to cut past any outer gold plating or flash-coating to reach the core metal beneath.

  3. 03

    Apply a Drop of Acid

Select the 9ct Gold testing acid. Using the bottle applicator, apply a tiny drop of acid directly into the freshly filed notch.

  4. 04

    Observe the Reaction

Watch the notch closely for a matter of 3 seconds seconds and interpret the result using the reaction guide below.

Reading the Reaction

No Reaction / Clear Drop

Solid Gold

The metal inside the notch remains bright and unaffected. The gold content matches or exceeds the rating of the acid applied 9ct Gold (375). (Move to the next step 14ct-24ct test solution "Blue Lid")

Fizzing, Green Colour & Fumes, or Dark Discoloration

Not Solid Gold

The acid is reacting with base metal exposed at the core (copper, nickel, or brass). This confirms the item is gold-plated, gold-filled, or base metal.

Slow Brown Reaction

Lower Karat

The brown stain will become present after approx. 2 seconds. Gold content 9ct gold (375)

Cleaning and Safe Acid Storage

  1. 1

    Neutralize Immediately

After testing, rinse the tested area or apply a small pinch of baking soda to neutralize the acid completely before wiping clean with a damp towel.

  2. 2

    Reseal Acid Bottles

Ensure caps are tightly screwed on after every use. Store your testing solutions upright in a cool, dark place.

  3. 3

    Replace Regularly

To maintain accuracy, replace your testing acid bottles every 12 to 18 months, as air exposure gradually degrades chemical strength.
